Vinyl Siding Installation: Built to Move With a Maine Winter
Vinyl siding expands and contracts more than any other cladding we install — a full course can grow or shrink noticeably between a January cold snap and a July heat wave. Good vinyl siding installation is built around that fact from the first panel. Nailed wrong, it buckles, waves, or cracks its first winter; nailed right, it rides out decades of Maine's seasonal swing without a problem.
Why Vinyl Siding Is Installed to Move
Every panel is fastened through a nailing hem near its top edge, and that nail is driven to leave the panel able to slide slightly side to side — never nailed down tight against the wall. Each course also locks into the one below it and needs a small gap where it meets trim and corner posts, so the whole wall can expand and contract as a system rather than fighting itself.
Installed this way, vinyl siding handles Maine's temperature swing without buckling. Installed tight — a common shortcut — it looks fine the day it goes up and starts waving within a year or two as the panels have nowhere to go.
